A Life Well-Painted

Virtual Gallery Talk with Artist Carl Gawboy

A Life Well-Painted

The main focus of the project with the Tweed Museum of Art was a Virtual Gallery Talk with artist Carl Gawboy and Professor Rain Newcomb featuring five of Carl’s paintings.

Carl’s gallery was exhibited at the Tweed Museum of Art but because of the pandemic wasn’t open to the public.  The Tweed felt it was important to make at least some of his paintings available to the public so decided to do that through a virtual gallery talk.

The talk follows Rain and Carl as they walk through the history, inspiration and cultural relevances of five of Carl’s paintings.

Our job was to capture the story and the beauty of each painting for all their viewers.

Every one of Carl’s paintings tells a specific story.

Client

The Tweed Museum of Art is a Duluth based museum located at the University of Minnesota Duluth.  The Tweed has a global collection of over ten thousand objects covering eight centuries.

At the time of this project, the museum was featuring a gallery of the local artist Carl Gawboy.

Requirements

When we were first contacted by the Tweed, we were informed they were looking specifically for a documentary of the Carl Gawboy exhibition which would include a professor’s presentation, exhibition visuals, and audio from the curator.

Their main focus was to give an overview of Carl’s life work by focusing on five of his paintings.  The filming was done during the pandemic so the documentary evolved to a virtual gallery talk with Artist Carl Gawboy and Professor Rain Newcomb.

Solution

Our recommendation to the Tweed was a 15-20 min. video following Carl and Rain as they talked about five of Carl’s paintings much like if a visitor would had come in for a tour of Carl’s gallery.

We included closed captioning and ASL interpretation so that their video would be accessible to all of their visitors.

The Tweed also opted for three Social Media shorts to promote the virtual gallery talk on their website and Facebook page.

services rendered

30 min video

Their feature video was a 30 minute video of Carl and Rain conversing about five of Carl’s paintings.  This style of video is meant to make the viewer feel as if they were getting a private tour of Carl’s paintings.

audio/color

The filming was done in a way to give us full artist liberty over the audio and visuals.  The color and audio in the video are specifically done to draw in the viewer and hold them captive to the visuals.

Social Media Clips

Along with the full length virtual gallery talk, we provided three clips for the Tweed Museum of Art to use for promotion of their virtual gallery talk.

They were designed for Social Media and website use.

Captioning

This film includes closed captioning done in house for accuracy and compliance to current ADA standards.

Full production Process

This project required consulting and scheduling during the pre-production process, two days of filming, and the full post-production editing process including motion graphics.

asl interpretation

This film includes an ASL interpreter which has been included in a video box in the lower corners of the film.

This 30 minute virtual gallery talk follows Carl Gawboy and the host Rain Newcomb as they talk about five of Carl’s paintings. You will learn about the history of each painting, what inspired Carl, and what the paintings mean for Finish and Native cultures.
